A Sarnia officer stabbed in the line of duty Tuesday night has been released from hospital.
The 37-year-old constable suffered multiple stab wounds while responding to a man in distress call at the Seaway Building on Front Street.
It's alleged while conducting a search of an apartment unit, he was attacked by the occupant who emerged from a concealed area.
An update from the Sarnia Police Service said the officer suffered lacerations to his right arm, right temple, under his right eye, trapezius, back, and hand.
While in hospital the injured officer received numerous units of blood and plasma to stabilize his condition, and dozens of stitches.
He will be undergoing continued medical care to assess any nerve damage and long-term impacts.
"On behalf of our injured officer, his family, and all our members, we thank the countless citizens, police associations, police chiefs, police services from across Canada, premier Ford, Members of Parliament, and so many more, for their kind words and support. We are glad to have him home, and for him to begin the process of healing," read the statement.
Ryan Whiteway, 36, of Sarnia is charged with attempted murder.
The Criminal Investigations Branch continues to investigate and seek additional information regarding the incident.
The injured officer's name will not be released.
