Lambton Public Health (LPH) has reported the first lab-confirmed human case of West Nile Virus in 2024 after a resident recently tested positive.
News of this year's first human case came shortly after the virus was detected in a mosquito trap in Corunna on August 14.
"This positive human case and the positive mosquito trap indicates that (West Nile Virus) is present in our community," read an LPH media release. "It’s important for Lambton County residents to remain vigilant and take precautions to prevent exposure to mosquitos, and to eliminate mosquito breeding sites on their property."
So far this year, six human cases have been reported in Ontario.
While most people who are infected by the virus don't get sick, those who do usually experience mild flu-like symptoms. LPH said fewer than one per cent of people infected become seriously ill.
Tips to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes include wearing protective and light-coloured clothing, taking extra precautions from dusk to dawn (when mosquitoes are most active), and using repellants containing DEET or Icaridin.
Mosquito breeding areas can be reduced on properties by draining areas of standing or stagnant water, turning over pails and wheelbarrows, regularly changing bird bath water, and keeping eaves clear.
