Sarnia-Lambton United Way setting its sights higher for annual campaign

The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton is gearing up for its annual fundraising campaign.

This year's target has been announced, $1.487 million.

It's the first time in several years the agency has announced a higher goal than the previous year.

In 2023, the local United Way had hoped to raise $1.4 million to fund 17 local agencies providing over 31 programs and services.

Campaign Chair Mike Edgar said the agency exceeded its target, and has set this year's goal one percent higher than last year's achievement.

"We recognize the need is great this year, and our funded agencies along with their clients are feeling the effects of inflation," said Edgar. "We wanted to be realistic in terms of what can be raised while at the same time, recognizing those increasing needs."

Executive Director Dave Brown said thanks to early fundraising events, and late donations from last year, the campaign has already raised $300,000 or 20 per cent of its goal.

"So we're hoping to be at close to 30 per cent by the time the campaign officially kicks off on Tuesday, September 17 with the annual Day of Caring," said Brown.

Ahead of the Day of Caring is the annual Sarnia Sting Black and White inter-squad game on Saturday, August 31 at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

"Last year, we raised over $5,000 thanks to the generosity of the Sarnia Sting, and the many Sarnia Sting fans in the community," said Edgar.

Puck drop is at 4 p.m. and Admission is a donation.
