Lambton affordable housing project preparing for next steps

The County of Lambton showed off its plans for an affordable housing project in Sarnia Tuesday night.

There was a smaller than expected turnout as residents had the chance to get a look at the three-storey, 50 unit complex to be built on Kathleen Avenue.

Lambton County's Housing Services Manager Melisa Johnson said the smaller turnout was not necessarily a bad thing.

"When I look at the turnout, I think the lower the better," said Johnson. "It means people are satisfied with the design they've seen. When I look at the general comments we've received to date through social media or through one-on-one conversations, they have been overwhelmingly supportive."

"The other common comment is about the parking," said Johnson. "A lot of people have been watching the City of Sarnia planning meetings and parking is a common question from the city. So they were asking us about our parking and if we've done the research to support the number of units, which we are confident and we've done the research and back up the number."

The project, which includes 14 accessible units to be supported by the March of Dimes, goes before Sarnia City Council on November 18.

"So the next step is the formal public planning session through the city," said Johnson. "So we should know from the city then if it's approved or not. Pending approval then we will move right into site plan and building permits."

She said they're hoping to have shovels in the ground in the spring, and expect construction to take up to 18 months to complete.

The selection process for tenants has not been determined yet.

Johnson said there are over 900 individuals on the centralized waitlist for housing.
