The City of Sarnia has launched a new Meals for Mulch food drive in support of the Inn of the Good Shepherd.
Sarnia residents can drop off a non-perishable food item at the compost site from November 25 until December 13 in exchange for a free yard of mulch, woodchips, or compost, while supplies last.
“This is really just a fun way for us to give back, while providing our residents the chance to pick up some AA compost material at next to no price,” said Environmental Services Manager Joe Boothe in a statement.
Communications Manager Steve Henschel said in the past, the city has offered mulch giveaways to residents in the fall but this initiative presented itself as a way to support others ahead of the holiday season.
"This year, we kind of re-envisioned that as a way we could also do some good in the community," Henschel said.
The compost site, located at 379 St. Andrews St., is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
There's a limit of one free yard per visit.
Urgently needed items include cereal, fabric softener, pet food, diapers, side dishes, school snacks, cookies, crackers, fruit cups, pudding cups, large soups, canned fruit, peanut butter, jam, boxed macaroni and cheese, dish soap, sugar, coffee, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, and toilet paper.
