Charges laid in attempted New Year's break-in

A 39-year-old Sarnia man is facing a few charges for allegedly trying to force his way into a home on New Year's Day.

Sarnia police said the suspect went to a residential property on Maxwell Street near Copland Road Wednesday night, at approximately 10 p.m.

Police said the suspect reportedly knocked on the front door and tried turning the door handle.

When the homeowner opened the door to see who was outside, the suspect allegedly tried to force their way in.

Police said the homeowner was able to close the door and the suspect took off.

He was later found and arrested by a patrolling officer who responded to the call for help.

The accused was charged with break and enter and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Sarnia police are advising homeowners to follow the following safety tips.

- Keep doors, windows and garages locked at all times, even when you are home.

- Use exterior lighting and motion-activated lights during nighttime hours.

- Consider installing a doorbell camera or a home security system.

- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, do not open the door and call 911. Any visits at unexpected times, unusual hours, or providing unfamiliar or vague reasons for their visit should be deemed suspicious.

-Report suspicious activity. If a person refuses to leave your property or if you see someone loitering or checking doors in the area, call 911.
