Rotary Used Book Sale kicks off Friday at DeGroot's

Thousands of books have been collected for the Sarnia Bluewaterland Rotary Club's 2025 Used Book Sale.

Co-chair Dale Wilcox said the first sale will be held on Friday, January 17 and Saturday, January 18 at DeGroot's Nurseries on London Line.

"Our most expensive hardbacks are five dollars and I don't know about you but I shopped over Christmas for books for some of my family and it's nothing to pay $40 for a hardback," said Wilcox. "If we have the same donations as we did last year, we will certainly have the most up to date, most popular authors."

The sale will continue on the weekends of January 24-25 and January 31-February 1.

"We have all genres and we have up to date books. So, anybody who is a reader... come on out, find your favourite author and I'm sure you'll be able to pick up a few good bargains," she said.

Participants are encouraged to bring something to take books home in.

"Please bring your own bags because we don't have any plastic bags any longer to give out," said Wilcox.

Wilcox said it's one of their largest fundraisers.

"We do a number of smaller fundraising events, but our two large ones are Art in the Park and this book sale. Those two particularly underlie the grant money that we give out locally. In a couple of months there will be a notice again that we are looking for people to submit applications for grants," she said.

Over $40,000 was raised by the sale when it was held at DeGroot's for the first time in 2024.

"This year we are on the left hand side of the main entrance, not the right hand side like we were last year," said Wilcox. "We are in a bit of a warmer location than last year, but I'm sure folks will enjoy the ambiance at the nursery as well."

Wilcox said earlier this month they would be accepting books for the sale until January 28, but they've reached their limit early.

"We are now a full house of books, and hoping people will understand that we cannot take anymore books this year," she said. "Currently, we have all our tables full, and a lot more books on standby to put out as we sell this coming weekend. We have a better selection of quality books than we have ever had!"

The sales run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
