Sarnia-bound freighter freed from ice

The Manitoulin continues to make its way to Sarnia today, after being freed from the ice in Lake Erie over the weekend.

It took three coast guard cutters -- the Canadian Coast Guard cutter Samuel Risley and the American Neah Bay and Bistol Bay -- to finally free the ship on Saturday.

The 202-metre freighter had made its way to the Amherstburg area Monday morning, escorted by the U. S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the Mackinaw will provide ice-breaking assistance and escort the Manitoulin to Sarnia, where it's expected to remain for the winter season.

The freighter was returning to Sarnia after dropping off a load of wheat, when it became trapped in the rapidly forming ice on Wednesday near Buffalo, New York with 17 people on board.
