Former Walpole Island First Nation Councillor, federal NDP candidate dies

Known for his kindness, dedication, leadership, and spirit, Ernest "Rex" Isaac has died at the age of 55.

His family shared that he passed peacefully, at home, on February 14.

"Rex made significant contributions to his community through his service as a Councillor on the Walpole Island First Nation Band Council, where he worked tirelessly to advocate for and support the needs of his people," a Facebook post from the Walpole Island First Nation Council said.

Isaac wasn't just a voice for his community at a local level, his passion for leadership and want to make a difference also led him to federal politics. In 2015, he represented Lambton-Kent-Middlesex as the NDP Candidate in the federal election.

As a tradesperson, Isaac was also a member of Pipefitters UA Local 636.

He leaves behind his mother, six children, brother, and many nieces and nephews.

"Rex's contributions to Walpole Island First Nation and beyond have left a lasting impact and he will be deeply missed," the Walpole Island First Nation Council said as they expressed their condolences. "May his memory continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him."
