Sarnia police clamp down on transports detouring 402 backups

Increased commercial traffic volumes on the westbound Highway 402 approach to the Blue Water Bridge have created headaches for drivers several times this week.

On Wednesday and Thursday, trucks were lined up past Modeland Road.

Michigan Department of Transportation Deputy Director of Public Affairs Jocelyn Garza told Sarnia News Today there have been no extenuating circumstances leading to the increased commercial wait times.

"We had an increase in traffic this same time last year as well, but otherwise this just appears to be a case of additional commercial traffic," said Garza.

The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) has ramped up its enforcement following a noticeable increase of unauthorized truck traffic detouring through the city to avoid the longer than usual waits.

SPS is reminding commercial drivers they're only permitted on city streets if they are making a pick up or delivery, participating in driver training, or if Highway 402 is shut down and they need to use the emergency detour route along Exmouth Street.

Those caught violating the rules will face charges under the Highway Traffic Act and the City of Sarnia Bylaw.

Fines range from $100 to $260.
