Elderly woman robbed along Sarnia waterfront

Sarnia police are investigating after an unidentified man pushed a 73-year-old woman who was walking along Sarnia's waterfront Monday afternoon to take what was in her pockets.

Police said the incident happened near the MacPherson fountain at around 4 p.m.

The elderly woman suffered scrapes and bruises because of the fall.

Police said the suspect "expressed frustration" when he didn't find valuable items in her pockets. He reportedly took a set of keys and then ran south.

He's described as being in his late 20s with a thin build. At the time, he wore a camouflage sweater, dark jeans, and a black beanie hat.

Officers would like to speak with the woman who helped the victim in case she has any additional details that might help identify the suspect.

Anyone else who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact Det. Cst. Conor Maxim at (519) 344-8861 extension 6258.

Police are also asking individuals who may have been biking, running, or driving in the area to check their recording devices to see if they captured footage of the suspect.

Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.p3tips.com.

"While it is an unfortunate reality, when walking or exercising on public trails, or public spaces, a heightened degree of caution must be undertaken than in years past," read a media release.

The Sarnia Police Service has released a list of tips to help protect individuals.

- Stay alert and avoid distractions such as texting or wearing headphones.

- Walk with confidence and purpose, making eye contact with individuals you pass or encounter.

- Trust your instincts - if something doesn't feel right, divert from your route or seek immediate help.

- If possible, walk with a friend or in groups.

- Carry only essentials and keep them in a secure cross body bag or an inside pocket.

- Avoid carrying cash or valuables, such as cell phones, your purse, and jewelry.

- Carry a whistle to attract attention if needed.
