SPS investigating after election signs stolen, damaged

The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) is warning the public that stealing or damaging election signs could lead to criminal charges.

Officers have fielded several complaints leading up to the April 28 federal election.

Police said tampering with election signage is not only disrespectful to the democratic process but may also lead to charges like theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, interfering with election materials and trespassing.

Residents are urged to respect all posted election materials, regardless of political affiliation.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is encouraged to call Sarnia police at 519-344-8861, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Police said they appreciate the public’s cooperation in helping to ensure a fair and respectful election process for all candidates and voters.
