Creation of BG library hub gets large federal boost

Efforts to enhance and modernize the Bright's Grove library are getting a large boost from the federal government.

A post to the Bright's Grove Community Hub Project's Facebook page said $4.5 million has been allocated toward the creation of a new hub, under the Green and Inclusive Grant.

Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Nate Erskine-Smith recently announced the good news during a visit to Sarnia.

The funding will help restore Faethorne House, build a modern accessible library and give Bright's Grove the community centre it's never had.

The total estimated cost of the project is around $5.8 million.

The initial plan was to make the facility more accessible and add 7,000 square feet of library and gallery space.

However, the overall scope of the work might change due to the increased funding.

Committee Chair and Bright’s Grove resident, Mark Moran will be making a presentation to Sarnia City Council on Tuesday.

A final detailed design package will be presented to city staff.

According to the report, the committee remains confident that a fundraising goal of $1,000,000 can be achieved with a focus on donations tied to naming opportunities within the facility.

Around $4,000,000 has been set aside in the city's Bright’s Grove Library Capital Reserve.

Councillors George Vandenberg and Anne Marie Gillis are also members of the committee.
