Arson charge laid in January blaze

A Petrolia man has been charged with arson in connection with a fire earlier this year.

Sarnia Fire Rescue and Sarnia police responded to a blaze at a commercial building on Tecumseh Street near Rose Street the night of Friday, January 17.

Police said the fire appeared to have started on the roof and spread through the building.

Damage was estimated at around $200,000.

Police said once the flames had been extinguished, Sarnia Fire Rescue investigators had concerns about the origin of the fire.

An investigation was launched by the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal and the Sarnia Police Service Criminal Investigations Division.

Investigators determined the fire had been deliberately set.

A 54-year-old man has been arrested and charged with arson.

He's scheduled to appear in Sarnia court on July 7, 2025.
