Volunteers and students are expected to help freshen up Rocky the snake as he celebrates his second birthday on Monday.
Wendy Marsden started the public display just north of the Blue Water Bridge on June 16, 2023 with 13 rocks.
Wendy Marsden and her partner Rick launch Rocky the rock snake display along the St. Clair River waterfront in Point Edward. June 2023. Submitted photo.
She told Sarnia News Today she never predicted Rocky would grow so big.
"We were just going for a walk a few minutes ago, and it's awesome. It's two years and I'm telling you, the community has made it just so good," said Marsden.
Weather permitting, she's expecting high school students to come help.
"St. Pat's is bringing a bus of kids," Marsden said. "We're going to organize the rocks back into a snake and just get it back into shape for the summer."
She said Rocky is growing every day and they just want to make it more beautiful.
"Some of them that were not clear coated, Rick and I go along there quite often and just spray clear coat on them. But the ones that didn't do well over the winter, they can be repainted," Marsden said.
It's not known how many rocks are currently included in the display because Marsden said they haven't counted them recently, but 23,000 would be needed to reach a new record.
"We are trying to reach a record and if you're down there now, it has now gone to the next parking lot and we're thrilled," she said. "There's still a lot of interest and a lot of community help."
Those wishing to paint rocks for the display can attend a Jump Start session at Canadian Tire on June 27 and 28, Noelle's Gift will have rocks to paint at Tecumseh Park on July 12 and you can paint a rock at Art Path on August 16 and 17.
