More than 5.2 million above ground swimming pools sold over the last two decades are being recalled after nine drowning deaths were reported.
Those drownings were all reported in the United States, where a majority of the pools were sold. Health Canada said that of the approximately 266,000 units sold north of the border no incidents or drownings have been reported.
The recall notice involves different Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup Above-Ground Pools, that are 48 inches (122 cm) and taller with compression straps running on the outside and over the vertical support legs.
"The compression strap that surrounds the outside of the pool legs may create a foothold, allowing a child access to the pool, posing a drowning risk," Health Canada said.
The pools were sold between 2002 and 2025. A detailed list of the affected products can be found here.
Anyone with one of the recalled models is advised to ensure that kids access the pool unattended or, alternatively, to drain the pool until the repair can be installed.
Repair kits can be requested from the pool manufacturers.
