Captain Kidd Days marks 40 years

A popular summertime event in Corunna will celebrate 40 years with four days of family-friendly activities.

Chairperson Geoff Dale said Captain Kidd Days has "certainly changed" compared to when it launched in 1985.

He said it was held in downtown Corunna for several years before it relocated to the Corunna Athletic Park.

"It has definitely gotten larger and longer. It used to be a two-day event, now we're at four days," he said. "Over the last 10 years, we've added a full Sunday, we've added a large kids' zone, we've added movie nights, and several tournaments. It used to be a two-pitch tournament, now we have two-pitch, ball hockey, cornhole, and volleyball. We try to get something for everyone."

The event has also grown into something the community looks forward to each summer. Dale said about 4,000 to 5,000 people will attend throughout the weekend.

"Aside from a community event, it's a large fundraiser for several local organizations," he said.

It varies each year, but Dale said in recent years, roughly 16 to 18 organizations have benefited from the initiative.

"Approximately $40,000 has been given on average per year," he said. "A couple of years ago, we raised upwards of $100,000. We partnered with the Township of St. Clair to replace the skateboard and wheeled sports park in Corunna."

Dale said to celebrate the 40th anniversary, there will be a free community barbecue ahead of Thursday's movie night at Corunna Athletic Park.

"New this year, in our kids' zone, we have a large gaming trailer coming. So picture stadium seating -- movie theatre style seating and kids gaming," he said. "We're trying to do a throwback theme this year, back to the 80s and 90s. So Sunday night there will be no cover."

Captain Kidd will arrive at Ferry Dock on Friday at 6 p.m.

Saturday's activities will include various tournaments, live music, and a parade at 11 a.m. The parade route will start from Thompson Gardens and will go down Lyndoch Street to Fane Street, and will end at the athletic park.

On Sunday, the summertime tradition will conclude with a car show, a cornhole tournament, live music, and fireworks at 10 p.m.

A full schedule of activities can be found on the Captain Kidd Days' Facebook page or website.

Dale said they have several sponsors, which allow them to host this event each year. Shell has been the title sponsor for 10 years.
