LKDSB gets over $74M for new K-12 school in Forest

Blue Coast District School has received final approval from the Ministry of Education.

The Lambton-Kent District School Board (LKDSB) was approved for $74,066,925 in capital funding for the new Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 school in Forest.

The school board will now be able to move forward with construction, which is expected to start in September.

The school will be located west of the Shores Recreation Centre, and will consolidate Aberarder Central School, Bosanquet Central Public School, Kinnwood Central Public School and North Lambton Secondary School.

It will also support the communities of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, Lambton Shores and Plympton-Wyoming.

"We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Government of Ontario in helping us take this critical next step," said Director of Education Gary Girardi. "The Blue Coast District School will provide an inclusive, innovative, and future-focused learning environment for students from across the community for many, many generations to come."

The site will include a child and family centre with two EarlyON rooms, a three-room child care centre which will provide 49 new childcare spaces and modern facilities to support a wide range of educational and extracurricular programming for students of all ages.

"The project has been years in the making and reflects the input and vision of our students, staff, families and community partners," said Associate Director of Corporate Services Brian McKay. "We are excited to see construction begin and look forward to welcoming students to this beautiful new space."

In June, the name Blue Coast District School was approved following concerns of its previous name of Lambton Shores Community School.

In recognition of the site and in respect for the lands where the new school will be built, a land ceremony will take place in the upcoming weeks.

A groundbreaking ceremony is also expected to be held next month.
