Halloween house fire causes extensive damage

Damage to a home in Alvinston is extensive following a fire on Friday, October 31.

Brooke Fire Rescue Station Chief Ron McCabe said they responded to the home on Petrolia Line at mid-afternoon.

"When we got there, the fire was venting out through the roof of the house, fully engulfed on the east side of the home," McCabe said. "We responded with Watford on automatic aid and then we called Warwick and Kerwood (fire departments) for water and manpower as well."

"It spread into the attic of the old part of the house and we were able to get it controlled there, and stopped before it did a lot of damage to the front of the house," he added.

McCabe said they were able to get a lot of water on the fire quickly and removed part of the soffit to get water into the attic.

"The addition to the home, where the fire originated, was new style construction, light weight construction. That part of the home was built onto the old existing home, so it burnt quite extensively," he said.

McCabe said everyone, including dogs, got out of the home safely and there were no injuries reported.

"We were even able to go back in the original part of the house, after everything was under control and we had finished our overhaul. We went back in and brought some, which I'm not a big fan of, but I think it was a lizard, some frogs and different things in aquariums that we brought out for them," McCabe said.

He said that was a first for him, but "it's all part of the job."

McCabe said the cause is not suspicious, and is believed to be related to the furnace.
