At least 70 cats rescued from Sarnia home

Lambton Cat Rescue and the Sarnia and District Humane Society hope good homes can be found for at least 70 Siamese cats that were rescued from a Sarnia residence.

Lambton Cat Rescue Founder and Director Heather Lubbers, along with two volunteers, went to the home November 4 after being contacted by a concerned citizen.

In a Facebook post, she said they knocked on the door several times without a response.

Neighbours allege the situation has persisted for years, and said multiple notices from the city had been posted and subsequently removed from the residence.

Lubbers said when they looked through a window, they were alarmed to see dozens of cats living inside.

She said a formal report was filed with Animal Welfare, and the Sarnia Police Service was also contacted, adding they responded swiftly and professionally.

In a follow up Facebook post from the Sarnia and District Humane Society, the agency said the resident genuinely believed they were providing love and safety for the cats in their care.

"Our focus now is on compassion, healing, and ensuring these cats receive the care and bright future they deserve," it said.

It's reached out to partners who have the resources to help.

The agency said the cats are very frightened and undersocialized.

"Our goal is to continue to go into the house throughout the day, with our team of experienced handlers and bring the cats out. The cats have been and will continue to be fed and watered throughout this process," it said. At this time, the public isn't permitted to view the animals, as they need to decompress.

Once they have been fully assessed, medically treated and spayed/neutered, the agency will re-assess who needs fostering and who needs adoption.

Meanwhile, the Humane Society has teamed up with Petfood Warehouse to collect some much-needed items.

The Fill A Crate, Fill A Belly campaign is in need of pet supplies from food, treats, toys, bedding, and more.

Donations can be dropped off at the Pet Food Warehouse London Road location during the month of November.
