HUB collecting winter wear for those in need

Donations are being collected for HUB International's fifth annual winter wear collection drive.

Fundraising Coordinator Chassiti Westover said donations can be dropped off Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until November 28.

"We're accepting gently used or clean items; hats, mitts, scarves, socks, hand and foot warmers are good," Westover said. "We are accepting blankets, jackets, sweaters, stuff like that... as long as it's clean or gently used."

Small items will be placed outside of a few locations next month, including their building across from Norm Perry Park.

"The first week of December, we're going to be putting them downtown on the giving bench, the Lawrence House fence, and our tree out front of HUB International, which is [located at] 265 Exmouth Street," Westover said.

Ribbons will be tied around the items with a note reminding those in need they're not alone.

"We like to put [the items outside] because if people are a little nervous, or don't want it broadcast that they can't afford hats and mitts, at least it's accessible to them," Westover said.

She said the collection proves to be meaningful each year.

"There was a gentleman that came to us last year and he was so appreciative, and asked if he could take a hat off the tree," Westover said. "I said, 'of course' and he said 'this one I got last year off of the tree, so I'm going to donate this one back if I can get a new one.' It was really a full circle moment and felt amazing to see that the community does appreciate it."
