Auto thefts down, but Hondas and Toyotas still prime targets in Ontario

A new report from the Équité Association shows Honda and Toyota models were the most stolen vehicles in Ontario last year, even as overall auto theft numbers declined.

The 2024 Honda CR-V, 2022 Dodge Ram 1500, and 2019 Honda Civic topped the list of total thefts. By theft rate, the 2024 Lexus TX Series was the most targeted vehicle, with roughly one in four stolen.

Équité says auto theft remains a billion dollar problem in Canada, despite a nearly 26 per cent drop in Ontario thefts in the first half of 2025.

Experts say criminals still view auto theft as "high reward, low risk," and many sought-after models (particularly Hondas and Toyotas) hold strong resale value overseas.

Police credit stepped-up enforcement, public awareness, and new tools like automated licence-plate recognition for helping drive down the number of thefts.
