Sarnia man faces serious charges in intimate partner violence case

The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) says a child ran to a neighbour's house for help in an alleged case of intimate partner violence in the city's north end Thursday morning.

Police were called to a home on Lakeshore Road, near Colborne Road, at around 7:47 a.m. for an "incident in progress."

Officers were able to secure a woman, who had suffered facial injuries, and her children outside of the home.

Police said a man refused to exit the home and the Emergency Response Team, K9 Unit, crisis negotiators, and a critical incident commander were called in to help.

They also brought in the mobile command post.

Police said that, after some negotiating, the suspect surrendered to officers and was arrested just before 10 a.m.

The female victim was treated by paramedics at the scene, and no children were injured. Police said they have been taken to a safe space.

A Sarnia man was held for bail on eight counts of assault, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, and two counts of breach of release.

Police said officers were still on scene Thursday afternoon while a search warrant is executed to gather more evidence. More charges could be laid pending a further investigation by the SPS Criminal Investigations Division.

Further information will not be released in order to protect the identity of the victims.

November is Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month, and police said help is available.

You can call 9-1-1 in an emergency, the SPS main number at 519-344-8861 in a non-emergency.
