An incident at Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School has resulted in a student being detained.
Parents and caregivers were notified of the November 27 incident just before 1:30 p.m. on the same day.
In an email, Principal Melissa Mallette said "a student allegedly brought a knife to school, which resulted in an escalated situation."
"As soon as we were made aware of the situation, immediate measures were taken to protect our students and staff," Mallette said. "Doors were secured to keep the individual outside, and local police were contacted immediately. Officers arrived promptly and took additional steps to ensure the safety of everyone on site. The situation was resolved quickly, and the student involved was placed in police custody."
Mallette stressed in the message that the safety and well-being of their students is their highest priority.
"We are grateful for the swift response and support from law enforcement and our staff in managing this situation effectively," she wrote. "We understand that some students may have witnessed aspects of this incident that were upsetting. If your child expresses concern or needs support, please know that resources are available at the school. Our staff, including guidance counselors and mental health professionals, are ready to assist students who may need someone to talk to," Mallette added.
In an email to Sarnia News Today, Sarnia police Chief Derek Davis said the school administration received a complaint from students regarding another student who had been showing off a folding knife.
"Police located the student, had a brief interaction with them, resulting in an unconditional release," Davis said. "No charges were laid. There were no threats or violence."
Chief Davis said the student was detained briefly, not arrested.
