Sarnia police have laid attempted murder charges in connection with an intimate partner violence (IPV) call Monday night.
A call was made to 911 just before 9:30 p.m. from a cell phone.
Police said the caller was not speaking, but dispatchers could hear a woman screaming and sounds of a violent confrontation.
The phone was geo-located to the area of Bentley Court near Confederation Street, however responding officers did not have the exact address and began knocking on doors in an urgent effort to find the victim.
According to police, at one home, a visibly upset woman wearing blood stained clothing and suffering from facial injuries and a slash to her neck answered the door.
A man in the doorway, who police allege had fresh blood on him, was immediately arrested.
The victim was treated for bruising and numerous stiches at the hospital, and is in stable condition.
The investigation determined the accused and victim are in a domestic relationship and police claim the woman had been choked several times, threatened, and hit with various items just before officers arrived.
The SPS Criminal Investigation Division has taken over the investigation.
A 56-year-old man is charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement, and uttering threats.
His name is being withheld to protect the victim's identity.
