'Mittens for Mitton' to be held on Saturday

What's being referred to as a "cozy community celebration" is planned near downtown Sarnia on Saturday.

Mitton Village Neighbourhood Connects will host its second annual Mittens for Mitton event.

Spokesperson Wendy McKay said the group runs free community events in and around Mitton Village throughout the year.

"Most of us on the committee live in the neighbourhood," McKay said. "Some of the members in our community are having a hard time financially. So, people can come out and have a fun, free, evening and we're hoping, if they're able, if they could bring a new piece of winter clothing like a hat, or a scarf, or some mitts and we'll donate them to River City [Vineyard] or the Inn of the Good Shepherd."

McKay said they'll be set up in the Mitton Village Parkette, 135 Mitton Street South in Sarnia, on December 13 at 5:30 p.m. In case of extreme weather, the event will be held on December 20.

"Part of the event will be the donation of clothes. We're also going to have some crafts, special guests dressed up, free hot chocolate which is being provided by Blackwater Coffee, and free cookies," said McKay.

She said there will also be Christmas tree decorating and a lighting ceremony.

McKay said they were pleased with the inaugural event in 2024.

"It was a really cold night," said McKay. "I think we had between 25 and 35 people come, but we had a lot of people just drop off donations. So, we probably donated three large boxes, but I'm guessing, we didn't actually count."

The group asks for the donations to be new, or only slightly used.

For more information about the event can be found on the group's Facebook page.
