Suspicious activity call leads police to wanted man

A suspicious person call in Sarnia’s Rapids subdivision led police to arrest a man already wanted on multiple charges.

Early Saturday morning, a Sarnia by-law officer spotted a man wearing dark clothing and a face covering checking parked vehicles along Meadowlark Lane.

When the man noticed the marked police car, he quickly rode away on a bicycle, heading west along a nearby trail.

A short time later, Sarnia police Constable Shawn Urban and police service dog Vader arrived in the area on foot. While searching the Howard Watson Trail, officers found a black-and-blue Trek bicycle leaning against a fence, and fresh footprints nearby that led west toward Redford Avenue.

About 15 minutes later, as Constable Urban followed the trail of footprints, a man matching the earlier description was seen in a driveway on Redford Avenue. The 24-year-old man was quickly identified and arrested for trespassing at night.

During a search following the arrest, officers found the man in possession of a large amount of loose change, something police say is consistent with multiple vehicle entries.

Further investigation revealed he was already wanted on an outstanding warrant for break and enter, theft under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was also under a probation order that prohibited him from being on city streets between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m..

The man, who has no fixed address, was charged with trespass by night and two counts of breaching probation.

He remains in custody following his bail hearing.

Sarnia police are asking anyone who had items stolen from their vehicle in the Rapids subdivision overnight between December 12 and 13 to contact them.
