Habitat for Humanity hands keys to new homeowners in Forest

Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton handed the keys of a brand new home to a family of six in the town of Forest on Monday.

The home is a one of many built by Habitat as a part of the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Start.

A key ceremony was held inside the home for the Derby family, who expressed their gratitude.

"If it wasn't for this incredible organization, we would never have had the chance to own our own home. What they have given us is much more than walls and a roof, they've given us stability, hope, and a future we can build on," said Tabitha Derby.

The Government of Canada has committed $368,000 towards Habitat Sarnia-Lambton projects, including the Derby home.

"Every nail hammered, every board lifted, every hour spent on our home has made a difference that we will never forget. You didn't just build a house. You helped us build a home, a place where we can grow, dream, and make memories for years to come." Derby said.

Since 2019, the Government of Canada has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Canada to build more than 800 homes across the country.

Habitat Sarnia-Lambton would like to thank the many generous supporters who helped turn homeownership into a reality for the family, including the Government of Canada and the town of Forest.
