The first cold weather alert of the season has been issued by Lambton Public Health (LPH).
Lambton County’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Karalyn Dueck, put out the alert based on the latest forecast from Environment Canada predicting the temperature to drop to -15 C (5 F) overnight.
With the wind chill, it's going to feel closer to -26 C.
The alert is expected to remain in effect until Wednesday, January 21.
"The best thing that people can do is obviously dressing in layers. You know, when you're going outside, put everything on. If you're feeling too warm, then you can kind of take layers off. Covering exposed skin is extremely important," said Supervisor of Health Protection Lori Lucas.
LPH advises local agencies that provide shelter and assistance to those experiencing homelessness to prepare for an increase in demand.
"There's a list of warming centres on our website at www.lambtonpublichealth.ca, where you can kind of see, and they have the operating hours. And then for those who are experiencing homelessness, connecting with county social services. And then for after hours and on the weekends, connecting with the Good Shepherd lodge," said Lucas.
Overexposure to cold can be hazardous and even life-threatening.
