More Tundra Swans begin to flock to Lambton Shores

With temperatures expected to rise, it may be a good time to visit Lambton Shores, where at least 2,000 Tundra Swans were spotted this week near the Thedford Bog.

The beautiful birds began a gradual return to the area in small numbers in early March. However, numbers spiked this week.

Lambton Heritage Museum Educational Program Coordinator Colleen Inglis said traditionally, the March Break has been a time when swans have been in the area.

"Since they were here last week, but in small numbers, this week might be the best week to go," said Inglis.

On Monday, approximately 1,000 swans were seen in the fields on both sides of Greenway Road near the museum, and about 1,000 more were near the corner of Blain Road and Haig Line.

But with the sudden temperature change, many swans were seen huddled in the fields on Tuesday.

The birds will typically rest in Lambton County and feed as part of a 6,000 kilometre loop between Chesapeake Bay and the Canadian Arctic.

As many as 15,000 swans may rest in the Thedford Bog at a time.

Their numbers fluctuate each day depending on the weather, field conditions, and timing.

"Usually you need to bring your binoculars and maybe a camera with a zoom lens to get a good view of the birds," said Inglis. "Of course, they can be unreliable so it's totally up to them whether they're in the fields on a particular day."

Migration updates are posted daily on the museum's website. Residents can also call (519) 243-2600.

Environment Canada is forecasting highs of 8 C and 12 C by the end of the workweek.

Residents eager to catch a glimpse of the swans can also visit the museum's Return of the Swans exhibit, which will be available until April 4.

"You'll learn about the swans, get to make some origami swans, and try your hand at some Tundra Swan trivia," Inglis said.

Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors (65+) and students, and $3 for children. The site is open Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority has also launched a new self-guided tour, featuring the best viewing areas to watch the majestic birds.
