New bishop appointed as Ronald Fabbro retires

After 24 years, Bishop Ronald Fabbro is resigning from the Diocese of London and will be replaced by Rev. Daniel Miehm, who will serve as the 11th bishop of the Diocese.

Pope Leo XIV announced the appointment on Tuesday.

Bishop-designate Miehm is currently serving as the Bishop of the Diocese of Peterborough and will officially step into his new role in London on June 29.

Born in Kitchener in 1960, Miehm was ordained a Priest in 1989 and served in the Diocese of Hamilton until he was ordained a bishop in 2013. He then served as Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Hamilton from 2013 to 2017 and was installed as the 13th Bishop of Peterborough in April of 2017.

"I feel humbled to be called by the Holy Father to serve the Church as the Bishop of London. I am grateful to the Holy Father for his confidence in me, especially as I follow in the footsteps of Bishop Ronald Fabbro, who has given such stellar leadership in the Diocese of London, and to the Church in Canada," said Miehm in a statement. "It gives me both encouragement and consolation to know that he will continue to reside in the diocese, and I pray that he may continue to enjoy good health as he enters retirement."

Bishop Fabbro has served as the Bishop of London since 2002.

He offered his resignation prior to his 75th birthday in 2025 in accordance with the requirements of canon law, stated a media release on the Diocese of London's website.

"I've known Bishop Miehm for many years and am confident that he will be a good shepherd to the faithful of the Diocese. He comes to us with a wealth of experience as Bishop of Peterborough. He is a strong, compassionate leader with outstanding pastoral instincts and the wisdom to guide our Diocese into the future," said Fabbro. "I am profoundly grateful for the countless blessings I have received during the 24 years I have served as Bishop of this Diocese and will continue to pray for the faithful of the Diocese in my retirement."

The Diocese of London serves approximately 450,000 Catholics in southwestern Ontario, comprising the nine counties of Lambton, Kent, Essex, Perth, Huron, Middlesex, Elgin, Norfolk, and Oxford.
