New details released about weapon allegedly used in Dane Nisbet's murder

The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) has provided more details about the weapon believed to have been used in the murder of Dane Nisbet.

During a news conference on Tuesday, Chief Derek Davis released more information about the gun, one day after the arrest of the prime suspect, 24-year-old Kyaw "Chin" Doe in London.

"That weapon, we now believe it to be the murder weapon, is a Glock Model 45 handgun," said Davis. "It was found in a hotel safe with a magazine inserted. This magazine is capable of holding 30 rounds of ammunition."

Davis said the weapon is believed to have been smuggled into Canada from the United States.

"Our team, working with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, now knows that this weapon originated out of Georgia where the last record of a transaction involving it occurred in February of 2022," he said. This is an illegal firearm smuggled into our country that has been in circulation for the past four years. Forensic and ballistic examinations are still being conducted and we hope more information will be available in the future."

Doe was taken into custody at around 6:20 p.m. Monday in the area of Ranchwood Crescent, with help from the London Police Service.

He surrendered to officers without incident.

Police said their Emergency Response Team and OPP's ROPE Unit were actively searching for Doe, and that the Canadian Border Services Agency and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were also on alert.

Chief Davis said while Doe attempted to alter his appearance, he was a fairly identifiable individual and it was hard for him to surface in the daylight hours.

Davis said the investigation remains open, and can't say whether anyone else will be facing charges.

"Anyone who has been an accessory to hiding or concealing or having any involvement in this murder investigation will certainly be looked at. If charges are appropriate, they will be laid," said Davis.

Doe, who had been the subject of a Canada-wide warrant, is being held at the Sarnia Jail.

He's charged with second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

He appeared in bail court on Tuesday and was remanded into custody. He'll reappear in bail court on Friday, May 1.

A total reward of $50,000 had been offered for Doe's capture. The initial reward of $25,000 offered by police and Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers was increased to $50,000 after a donation by City-County Councillor Bill Dennis.

Chief Davis said there's no doubt the reward was an important aspect to the case in terms of gathering assistance.

He said it certainly helped raise the profile of the case provincially and nationally and made public appeals more prominent.

"This reward level is a record for Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers, said Davis. "We cannot provide any information about what may or may not have happened with the reward, nor even if any tips were received. Crime Stoppers is built around anonymity. It's protected by the courts and it's protected by us. We thank the Crime Stoppers team, and the generous donors."

Oudom "Richard" Bun, 23, of London, 19-year-old Ava-Leigh Lightheart of Sarnia, and 19-year-old Johnathan Osborne-Walsh of Sarnia are also in custody in connection with the shooting.

Bun was arrested in London on April 11 and faces charges of second degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Police said the crown may reduce Bun's charges from second degree murder to accessory to murder.

That's one of the charges that both Lightheart and Osborne-Walsh are currently facing. They were arrested April 12 after warrants were executed at an Indian Road home in Sarnia and a Venetian Boulevard hotel in Point Edward.

Lightheart allegedly took possession of the gun after Doe was dropped off at home in London and was driven back to Sarnia, where she is alleged to have later gave the gun to Osborne-Walsh.

Nisbet, 20, died in hospital in the early morning hours of Friday, April 10 after someone opened fire outside a bar on the Lambton College campus.

Two other people were wounded, but they're out of hospital and recovering.

Hundreds of people attended Nisbet's funeral service on April 16.

The local hockey player is being remembered as a kind, positive, competitive young man.
