A long-awaited housing development in Point Edward is finally moving ahead.
Local Developer Alan Merrington said he has signed a subdivision agreement with the Village of Point Edward for 21 new homes at 1600 Venetian Blvd.
He said it's be a long process to get to this point.
"The development started almost eight years ago," said Merrington. "The property was bought of S&R developments, and then when we got into the process of planning there was a few snakes there, Butler's Gartersnakes which were an at risk species. That took us at least five or six years to get a permit for that, then we could move on. At the other end, the northwest side where the bridge ends, it's archeological land. That took us a little while to get through archeological assessments."

Merrington said site servicing is expected to begin the week of May 11, with hopes to see construction started on the one floor villas within a month.
"There's a canal at one end which will have a boardwalk," said Merrington. "At the other a portion of the property has been given to Point Edward and that will be a greenspace and the subdivision will be enclosed with a fence."
The one-level villas will go for anywhere from $600,000 to $700,000.
"I think with the government's, tax rebate on the HST for new homes, which will save people $100,000 we hopefully might sell out."
