OPP issue reminder to keep golf carts off roads

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding the public golf carts are to be exclusively operated on private property and are not permitted to be driven on Ontario roads.

Cst. Tyler Campbell said they've received several recent complaints, specifically in Lambton Shores and St. Clair Township.

He said it presents safety concerns for riders, pedestrians, and drivers.

"Members of the public can expect to see an increased police presence throughout these areas as officers continue providing education and enforcement surrounding the improper use of golf carts," said Campbell. "Officers may also issue fines to individuals operating golf carts unlawfully on public roadways."

Police said those caught driving a golf cart on a highway could face charges including operating a motor vehicle on a roadway with no insurance, operating a motor vehicle with no vehicle permit, and operating a motor vehicle on roadway with no driver's licence.

In Ontario, you could face a minimum $5,000 fine for operating a motor vehicle on a roadway without insurance.

Charges can apply for operating without a proper permit, lack of proper equipment, and license violations if underage.

Anyone found to be intoxicated by alcohol or drugs could face impaired driving charges while operating a golf cart on or off the roadway.

More information can be found on the Ontario government's website.

Police said traffic safety is everyone's responsibility and we're being urged to do our part to keep Ontario roads safe.
