The City of Sarnia is opening up its compost site for the long weekend to give local gardeners a jump start on their growing seasons.
Environmental Services Compliance Superintendent Katherine Gray said the site, located at 379 St. Andrew Street, is typically closed on Saturdays, but will be open on Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to sell compost, wood chips and mulch.
"It is commonly the busiest time of year for gardeners, definitely one of the busiest weekends, so we're hoping to have all of our materials available for those that want to start that weekend," Gray said.
Materials are priced at $22.25 per cubic yard, with a limit of 25 yards per customer per visit.
All of the products are natural, none of the mulch or wood chips have been dyed.
The city said wood chips sold at the site are created from wood gathered across the year through forestry operations.
Mulch is the product of brush collected at the site and through curbside collections.
Compost sold at the site is generated from grass, leaves and other yard waste that is gathered locally through curbside collections and drop off at the compost site.
The city said the drop off of yard waste and brush will not be permitted during the one-day sale.
