Indian consulate issues water safety alert to international students following drownings

A rise in drownings has prompted the Consulate General of India in Toronto to issue a safety advisory this week, with international students specifically mentioned.

"The Consulate has been receiving increased number of drowning cases of Indian nationals in Canada," the notice posted to the organization's Facebook page said. "Indian nationals, particularly Indian international students, are advised to exercise extreme precaution while visiting lakes, rivers, beaches and other water bodies."

The organization is encouraging Indian nationals to follow all safety instructions, avoid entering unfamiliar or unsafe waters and wear life jackets where required and recommended.

Earlier this month, the body of a 22-year-old from Nepal, located in South Asia just north of India, was pulled from the waters of Lake Huron.

The individual went missing at Pinery Provincial Park on May 18.
