Highway 402 speed limit set to increase next month

The province is increasing the speed limit again along sections of Highway 402.

From Waterworks Road to 350 metres east of Colborne Road in Sarnia, and on a short stretch between Highway 401 to White Oak Road in London, the speed limit will be 110 kilometres an hour beginning July 31, 2026.

In 2022, the Ford government boosted the speed limit along the 402 from Waterworks Road to London to 110km/h an hour following a pilot project in 2019.

In a news release, the Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria said the government is helping drivers get where they're going faster and safely.

“We’re going to keep supporting commuters, workers and businesses by investing in our $31 billion plan to build and expand roads and highways, so we can get people and goods moving across Ontario and keep workers on the job," Sarkaria said.

Other roadways getting a speed limit boost between now and the end of September include, the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) and sections of Highways 400, 401, 403, 416, and 417.

Once in effect, nearly 89 per cent of the highway network in Ontario will have a posted speed limit of 110 km/hour, up from 43 per cent.

The province said with the new speed limit in place, drivers travelling from Sarnia to Toronto could save nearly 20 minutes.
