Sarnia election shakeup: Bradley runs, McRoberts withdraws

Just hours before the official deadline to file nomination papers for the fall municipal election, there was a last minute shakeup in the race for Sarnia’s top political seat.

Incumbent Mike Bradley announced he is seeking a 12th term in office.

"Today I registered as a candidate for mayor of the City of Sarnia, a city I deeply love and have devoted my life to," said Bradley in a statement. "Over the last few months I have listened to the citizens who share my love of Sarnia, urging me to run. Their support is deeply appreciated."

The 71-year-old Bradley was first elected mayor in 1988.

In his statement, he said this election is about the future of Sarnia and what sort of leadership will take the city forward, in a way all citizens can be proud of.

"I offer proven, experienced, strong leadership that delivers real results," he said. "At city and Lambton County Council, I champion fiscal fitness, affordable housing, social and environmental issues by working with business, labour, First Nations, Queen’s Park and Ottawa."

Chrissy McRoberts, who originally threw her hat into the ring back in May, officially withdrew her name from the mayoral race on Thursday, and is now running for a city/county councillor position.

In a video, McRoberts said she didn't want to be responsible for vote splitting.

Meanwhile, George Stanko also added his name to the ballot for the mayors position earlier this week.

Bradley and Stanko join Bill Dennis, Scott Molson, and Carrie McEachran in the contest.

Prospective candidates had until Friday, August 21 at 2 p.m. to file their paperwork or officially pull their names.
