Chief Chris Plain has resigned from his role as Anishinabek Nation Deputy Grand Council Chief to seek election back home.
The former Aamjiwnaang First Nation Chief was elected as deputy grand council chief in June of 2024.
In a statement on behalf of Anishinabek Nation, the Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige thanked Plain for his dedication and hard work.
“Although we are saddened by his departure, we respect his decision to step down from his current role. It has been a real honour to work with him, and we are proud of the work that we have accomplished together this term," said Debassige in the release.
Plain said he is stepping down to offer his experience directly to his home community once again.
"Serving the Anishinabek Nation in this role has been one of the greatest honours of my life. I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me and for the opportunity to work alongside our Grand Council Chief, our member First Nation Chiefs, Councils, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, citizens, and the dedicated Anishinabek Nation staff.”
He added that he remains proud of the work done during his tenure to strengthen member communities, protect treaty rights and jurisdiction, and revitalize language and culture.
Aamjiwnaang First Nation will hold its election on Friday, October 16. Plain is running against incumbent Janelle Nahmabin.
Polls at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Community Centre will be open from 9 a.m. 8 p.m.
