Sarnia police reach new deal featuring wage increases, improved benefits

A long bargaining process has officially come to a close in Sarnia.

Members of the Sarnia Police Association (SPA) and Sarnia Police Service Board (PSB) have ratified a new three-year collective agreement covering 2025 through 2027.

Joint approval of the deal was announced following a vote on October 1.

Board Chair Kelly Ash welcomed the successful ratification of the collective agreement, officially concluding negotiations.

"Through respectful dialogue, good-faith negotiations, and a commitment to finding common ground, the parties were able to achieve a fair contract that recognizes the interests of our members, the service, and the community. The board thanks everyone involved for their dedication and professionalism throughout these negotiations," said Ash.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, Ash said the agreement includes annual wage increases ranging from 3.5 to five per cent over the term.

"The agreement also includes enhanced health care benefits to keep pace with comparators, premiums for specialized duties equivalent to other Canadian police services and increases to pregnancy/parental leave and psychological benefits for members," Ash added.

SPA President Gavin Armstrong also praised the outcome.

"After a very long process, we are pleased to have reached a fair agreement with the PSB for the SPA membership," Armstrong said.

The SPA represents the majority of the service with the exception of the members of the Senior Officers Association (SOA), the chief and deputy chief.

Interim Chief Mike Federico said the agreement reflects the value of the daily service provided by both sworn and civilian members to the community.

"I am pleased that their commitment to public safety and community service has been recognized, and I look forward to continuing our work together in serving the community," said Federico.
