The Sarnia Sting snapped a five-game losing skid on Wednesday, beating the Owen Sound Attack 6-4 during the third annual School Day Game at Progressive Auto Sales Arena (PASA).
Jordan Bax scored the first two goals for the Sting within the first six minutes of the game. Shortly after, Beckham Edwards scored the third goal for Sarnia during a power play.
Owen Sound landed on the board with a power play goal in the first period.
With two more goals for the Sting during the second period, Sarnia had a healthy lead.
However, Owen Sound closed the gap with three goals during the second and third periods, bringing the score to 5-4.
Easton Walos scored his second goal of the game in the third period, securing Sarnia's win.
During a post-game media conference, Walos said the team knew it had to start off strong.
"We've been pretty slow to start. We wait and sit back but today, obviously, we scored first shift and I think got the forwards rolling after that," Walos said.
Bax agreed it was good "to get out of a slump and put up a big number."
Wednesday's victory also served up some revenge after the Attack beat Sarnia 7-3 in their own School Day Game held last week. Bax said the loss "got them going" for this week's game.
"We didn't want that to happen again and we kind of owed them so everyone was really dialed in," Bax said. "We played a good 60 minutes and that was the key."
Over 2,000 students from the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) attended Sarnia's School Day Game.
For some students, it was their very first live hockey game.
“It’s good for kids to be able to participate in events like this and we are fortunate to have such great community support and partnerships that make it possible,” said LKDSB Director of Education Gary Girardi in a media release. “Together, we’re building moments that really matter for our students.”
The event specifically welcomed elementary school students in Grades 3 to 6.
“Our organization prides itself on being a leader in the community and a positive role model for our youth. The School Day Game is one of the most meaningful events we host each season," said Sarnia Sting Manager of Group Sales and Experience Val Gotelaer.
Students in attendance were also provided with a healthy snack, courtesy of Lambton Dairy Farmers and Kyle’s No Frills.
The Sarnia Sting will host the Brampton Steelheads at PASA on Friday, November 7. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on CHOK (103.9FM/ 1070AM).
