Imperials seeking revenge in NFC season opener

The Sarnia Imperials will host the Steel City Patriots on May 30 at Norm Perry Park to kick off the Northern Football Conference season.

The schedule was unveiled at the league's recent annual general meeting.

It's a revenge game for the Imperials, after they lost 43-0 to the Patriots in the second round of the 2019 playoffs.

President and Head Coach Jake Cherski said they've been able to attract 20 new recruits and are looking to sign them in the near future.

"We've really been paying attention just to getting new faces and new blood, we're trying to change the culture of the entire organization from top to bottom," said Cherski. "Our team has a lot of depth from the returning players that I know of and the rookies that we've been able to recruit. We should be strong in every position. I'll be upset if we don't win the NFC this season."

The Imperials are also home on June 6 against Sault St. Marie, June 27 against Oakville, and July 11 versus Tri-City.

They have games in Sudbury, Tri-City, GTA, and Sault St. Marie on June 20, July 4, July 18, and July 25 respectively.

The team also previously announced some changes at the top of the club, including the hiring of Nathan Ainsworth as director of business operations.

Last season, quarterback Julian Shadd-Gentry and defensive back Tyler Storie were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. Shadd-Gentry tossed for 2,086 yards and 20 touchdowns. Storie caught four interceptions, and four receiving touchdowns.
