Petrolia Squires' glory years being recognized with alumni game

The Petrolia Squires are celebrating 50 years with a special celebration on Friday.

The WOAA senior hockey club is holding an alumni game at the Greenwood Rec Centre, with about 45 former players expected to suit up.

Displays of the Allan Cup and Squire history will be on hand, including old jerseys, jackets, pictures, and articles. There's also a silent jersey auction and swag available for purchase.

Players taking the ice include Brad Hull, Todd Bidner, Jeff Gould, Mike Gardner, Scott McPhail, Steve Barraclough, and Brayden Belan.

Former Squires coach Rob Menzies will be one of the coaches.

The Squires are two time Allan cup champions, in 1979 and 1981. They were also finalists in 2001 when the playoff contests were played in Sarnia before capacity crowds.

The team started out back in 1969 as the Petrolia Chiefs.

Friday's game gets underway at 8 p.m. Admission is $5, and elementary kids get in for free.
