The number of people using food banks and Windsor's Downtown Mission are at an all-time high.
Executive Director Ron Dunn says last year at this time, about 20 people were sleeping at the mission per night. That's now up to about 45. Not to mention the 250 lunches served daily, up from about 100 five years ago.
With so many people turning to the mission for help, Dunn says the length of wait times between food bank visits will be decreasing in the new year.
"We were every three months, and in conjunction with other food banks, they could go many places. But we were finding that three months was too long, so we dropped it to two months," he explains. "Soon we're going to drop it to a monthly visit, just to give people more help, more often."
Dunn is not sure what continues to contribute to the growing number of poor in Windsor, but says the city's unemployment numbers haven't been improving.
In the new year, the executive director hopes to see some announcements regarding social enterprise and initiatives to get people back to work, especially the youth.
