The Town of Lakeshore is implementing a subsidy program for residents to install a backwater valve.
Residents have until June 30 to apply for the program that will provide residents with 80% of the costs of the installation, up to $750.
Councillor Steven Wilder says initially, they are just receiving applications and will commit funds after they see how many people are interested in the program.
"What we've done here is to try and find out how many people may ultimately need to apply for this, so we can get a handle on what we need, to set in terms of a funding level so we can come up with a plan, whether it's a multi-year strategy or we can take it all in one year," says Wilder.
Initially, town administration recommended budgeting $7,500 to the program, but many councillors voiced concerns that would not be enough to cover the majority of the residents who were flooded in September. According to town records approximately 140 homes flooded on September 29, 2016.
A report will come forward to council after the application deadline for councillors to determine the funding plan moving forward.
