The Windsor Essex County Sports Hall of Fame is parting ways with the Caboto Club of Windsor due to its men-only policy.
The Windsor Essex County Sports Hall of Fame has decided to suspend its long-standing relationship with the Caboto Club of Windsor until such time that the Caboto Club modifies and updates its policies on inclusivity," the hall of fame said in a Facebook post, Wednesday evening. "The hall of fame thanks the Caboto Club for its support over the past decades and hope that our values regarding inclusivity will align again in the near future."
The club came under fire over its men-only membership rule earlier in February after Premier Kathleen Wynne moved a public town hall meeting from the Caboto Club to the St. Clair Centre for the Arts.
Club membership has been exclusive to men since its founding almost a century ago. There is a women’s auxiliary board, but members of it do not have the right to vote on club policy.
The Windsor and District Labour Council has been encouraging its member unions to boycott the club due to the policy, and trustees at the Greater Essex County District School Board will vote on a motion in March to stop holding events there.
City councillor Bill Marra has also threatened to quit the club if a change is not made to the club's policy.
Dennis Delgado, the president of the Caboto Club, has previously told BlackburnNews.com that a discussion on allowing women to join the club is ongoing. However, in the meantime, the club will not open membership up to women.
