Ontario's police watchdog says two Windsor police officers used their weapons in a fatal shooting Wednesday.
The Special Investigations Unit confirmed in a tweet that two officers fired their weapons during the incident on Goyeau Ave, hitting a man multiple times. The 33-year-old man was shot outside the McDonald's restaurant at Goyeau and Wyandotte St. E. He was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later.
A knife block and a number of knives were discovered near the restaurant's drive-thru window.
Windsor Police Deputy Chief Vince Power confirmed on Wednesday that the shooting took place after the man interacted with officers. Two officers were treated at the hospital for non-life threatening injuries and released.
The SIU, which is routinely called if a police officer is involved in a situation in which a civilian is killed or injured, says eight additional witness officers have been identified.
