Town Councillor Calls On Essex To Crack Down On Idling

Essex Town Councillor Sherry Bondy says she sees people idling their vehicles all the time, but wonders at a time of environmental concern and skyrocketing gas prices if it is socially acceptable any more.

While Windsor has an anti-idling bylaw, Essex does not. Bondy hopes to change that with a notice of motion to council Tuesday night.

"We did a public education campaign two years ago, but it wasn't very effective," admits Bondy. "But, we just had a presentation from our policy planner on global warming, and I feel like I need to champion this."

This time, she hopes councillors will get behind her in asking the administration to bring back a draft bylaw limiting how long residents can idle their vehicles. However, she admits the town has some challenges when it comes to enforcing it.

"The difference between Windsor [and Essex] is that they have more enforcement officers, so that's one disadvantage that we have," she says. "But I've also looked at other bylaws that we have done, for example, the poop and scoop and the anti-smoking bylaw in parks. A lot of them are self-policed."

Bondy's motion will be debated on June 4.
