Kingsville honours veterans with banner project

The Town of Kingsville is recognizing the sacrifice made by local veterans and the 100th anniversary of the First World War with a new project.

Last month, town council unanimously voted to hoist 15 banners on town streets, each paying tribute to a veteran or group of veterans with a connection to Kingsville.

The town has also sponsored five of them.

"We want to do everything we can to let veterans know we appreciate their service and their sacrifice," said Jay Atkin, project organizer for the Kingsville Salute to Veterans Banner Project. "This banner project is two-pronged. It's visible for the veterans, but it's also great for Kingsville. We're really looking forward to these 15 going up, and we hope to have many more moving forward next year."

There is a celebration planned at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 188 on Division St. in Kingsville starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The launch will include a bagpipe procession and the unveiling of the first ceremonial banner. The remaining banners will be raised around the town next week.

"Raising the Salute to Veterans banners each year allows us to ensure that continued recognition and respect is nurtured in future generations," said Mayor, Nelson Santos.

Information about each veteran will be added to a Salute to Veterans book to be shared before Remembrance Day with students, residents, and other groups in Kingsville.
