Halloween tips to keep you safe

The Ontario Provincial police is reminding the public to be safe, and have fun "trick or treating" this Halloween.

OPP officials said the Halloween excitement can cause children to forget how to be careful. Police recommend walking and not running from door to door. They also recommend using sidewalks and crossing walks, and crossing streets at the corner and staying in well-lit areas.

Other helpful tips include:

  • Adults accompanying children at all times and small children "trick or treating" when it is still daylight, if possible.
  • Older children staying in groups, planning a route and sticking to it.
  • Let family know what route is being taken and agree on a time to be home so they can go out to look for you if you do not return on time.
  • Only go to lit homes and never go into a house or apartment even if you are invited.
  • Don't talk to strangers or get into vehicles while out "trick or treating."
  • Always check your treats before you eat them. Look for packaging that has been tampered with, or is loose or torn. If you are suspicious, throw the goodies away.
  • Homemade treats can be dangerous and should be disposed of as well unless you know and trust the person who gave them to you.
  • Drivers should slow down and watch for children.
